The most important component of the UN Spacy galactic defense forces are the Variable Fighters, also known as Valkyries, or Veritech Fighters (Robotech). VFs are unique mecha able to transform from flying fighter to a robotic soldier mode, allowing the space forces extra flexibility and mobility in battle. Because Variable Fighters have different modes of attack, they can pursue the enemy in space, in the air, or on the ground. Missiles can be fired from the craft in all three modes
The three battle modes of the UN Spacy Variable Fighter are:
FIGHTER MODE : This is the traditional airplane fighter mode. In this mode, the VF is in the shape of a fighter craft, with legs, arms, and head folded into the body of the plane. This mode can be used either in space or in atmospheric flight.
GERWALK MODE : An "in between" mode that has proven extremely useful in ground combat. In Gerwalk mode, the VFs legs and arms have emerged from the aircraft shell, but the head is still enfolded. This is a "glide" mode that enables the craft to either move hovering above the ground or continue atmospheric flight. Gerwalk mode allows the pilot to have full control of battroid limb functions while continuing to control the VF like a fighter. Gerwalk mode is the most difficult of all three modes for pilots to control.
BATTROID MODE : Full mecha mode. In Battroid mode, the head, arms, and legs of the fighter are fully emerged and upright, completing the "giant robot" look of the craft. In this mode, the VF has the additional option of using its legs to walk. The arms have fully functional "hands" and "fingers" that can be used to pick up and hold objects or even people. In Battroid mode, VFs have a hand-held gun pod rifle for defense.
Variable Fighters are in continual development and old designs are constantly being evaluated and phased out in favor of newer, more advanced designs. The UN Spacy Variable Fighters used in Macross 7 are:
