ORIGINS

Gamlin's childhood is obscure, but he first decided that he wanted to be a pilot when attending a military funeral as a young boy and seeing three Valkyries fly over the cemetery in a military salute. Gamlin trained under the fighting ace Milia Fallyna Jenius herself, and graduated at the top of his class. He was assigned to Diamond Force with Kinryu and Docker, which is where he is when the series begins.

PERSONALITY

Gamlin is an excellent soldier and a perfect gentleman, courteous, kind, and passionate about what he believes in. Outside of the military, however, he is a bit of a klutz and is easily embarassed. He has a tendency to become uptight about details, but most of the time maintains a good luck at the whole picture and unlike pilots such as Docker, has a good grasp of common sense.

FLYING AND THE MILITARY

Perhaps the most important thing in Gamlin's life and his first love is his Valkyrie. When he flies, Gamlin is transformed from a shy young man to a deadly, dangerous, and incredibly self-confident fighter pilot. He also possesses an enormous wealth of knowledge about the military and flying, causing many of the younger pilots to look up to him with a kind of awe. He's a natural commander, handling his people both firmly and with compassion, probably having learned much of his command style from the former Diamond Force commander, Captain Kinryu.

Towards the middle of the series, it becomes quite clear that Gamlin is not as attached to the military as he is to his own ideas of what the military should be. His idealized version of warfare causes him to drop out of the military and do some serious thinking. However, someone like him could never stay away from the military for long, especially with a war going on, and he quickly rejoins, vowing that he will make a difference, even if the military thinks otherwise.

APPEARANCE

Gamlin has light lavender colored hair and hazel eyes and usually is shown dressed in a UN Spacy flight suit. When off duty, he has various civilian clothes, including an orange polo shirt (why do characters voiced by Koyasu always wear orange shirts? ^^;;)

BASARA AND MUSIC

Gamlin is a self-described hater of rock music. Perhaps he was raised in a conservative household, or perhaps he just never really had the desire to be exposed to it, but whatever the case, his first few encounters with Fire Bomber are disastrous. Of course, being "bothered" by Basara while in the middle of battle really didn't help Gamlin's judgment of this form of "noise."

Part of Gamlin's dislike of Basara probably stemmed from the fact that both of them are very much alike. Both passionate about their "causes" and desperate to reach for a higher goal than the people around them, both incredibly stubborn and change-resistant. However, Basara and Gamlin seem to realize this and slowly but surely come to terms with their differing viewpoints. In the end, both of them see that really all they're fighting for is the same thing. By the last episode, the two of them are great friends, knowing that there are some things that they'll always disagree on, but also knowing that they can each trust the other absolutely.

Gamlin's view of Basara's music also evolves according to his relationship with Basara and he realizes that understanding Basara's music is essential to understanding who Basara is. Slowly, he sees that it's not just noise, but Basara's heart and soul and his vision for the universe. It is Gamlin who begins singing the song that wakes Basara up in the last episode of the series.

MYLENE

Arranged matches don't always end happily, but in this case, it seems that Mayor Milia made a good match. Gamlin and Mylene's first meeting is awkward, but he finds that the cheerful bassist adds a bit of spunk and variety into his otherwise monotonous life. Gamlin by nature isn't a very creative person, and Mylene's antics serve to amaze rather than annoy him (as they do Basara). Their relationship progresses from acquaintences to friends quickly, and Gamlin begins to think that she's the one for him. However, he's bothered by the fact that Mylene is much more familiar with Basara than she is with him. For the time being, he's content to wait until she makes up her mind, or at least grows a little older.

DYNAMITE 7

Gamlin appears briefly in Dynamite 7. He shows up to all of Mylene's concerts and gives her flowers, but realizes that she is despondant with Basara gone. He decides to go look for the absent singer, following his Song Energy Detector to Zola, where he begins to ask around to see if anyone there had seen someone like Basara. He finally realizes that Basara is singing in space again and goes up to see the galactic whales and to help the Zolan forces chase away the poachers.
