CITY 7

THE FLOWER GIRL

Eyes: Blue
Hair: Straw blond
Seiyuu: Nakagawa Akiko
First appearance: episode 1

The flower girl appears in every episode of Macross 7, dressed in a frilly pink dress with a white collar and large buttons down the front, wearing a straw hat and clutching a bouquet of flowers. In each episode, she tries to give Basara the flowers at least once, but something always get in the way of her delivering her present, either by losing sight of Basara, dropping the flowers, or having someone else take them from her. In later episodes, she is always shown with a small radio which plays a Fire Bomber tune. Except for uttering small sounds such as "oh!" and "ah!", she never speaks.

The flower girl is not so much a real person as a symbol of the citizens of Macross 7. She is there to remind the viewers that while Sound Force is saving the galaxy and Max and Milia are arguing over fleet politics and Gepernitch is planning his next great assault, there are ordinary citizens on each of the ships on the fleet, going about their daily lives and hoping that the war will end soon. The flower girl's devotion to Basara shows the viewer that Basara is the one person the Macross 7 fleet can always count on in times of need. Her appearance and the music that plays on her radio is also somewhat of a mood-setter for each episode.

The flower girl's mission is fulfilled in the last episode, #49, when in a sudden fit of determination, she throws the flowers into the air as Basara passes by on his glider, and he catches them. In that moment, the flower girl's function as a symbol of the people of Macross 7 is finally complete.
